so we spent our new year beginning at the beach house. just the marshall clan. and lots of books and blankets. and food. and my new le creuset dutch oven. yumminess.
it was lovely. except for my huge head cold. but even that wasn’t too bad since all that was on my agenda was to sit on the couch and read. and maybe cook a dinner at some point in the day. so it wasn’t too taxing on my fragile self.
and now we are back in town and adam has two days off. and i am a bit reticent to tell you what we are going to do with his free time lest you all make fun of us...
oh heck, when have i cared that you all (all meaning my 6 blog readers) making fun of us?
we (and by “we” i mean adam) are making couches. MAKING couches. with wood and screws and nails. not like ordering them online. not putting them together because they came flat packed in a box. nope. from scratch and real wood. and then we will have foam cut to fit and then we will (and by “we” now i mean me) will sew some lovely microfiber covers. i have NO idea how this is going to turn out. but it is something that we have been thinking about for a while.
it started when we almost ordered new couches two summers ago... and then we met our friend/enemy dave ramsey. and that thought went out the window. darn that dave.
but our 25 year old couches that adam bought when he first was out of college (read into that “they were cheap couches to begin with”) were giving up their glory day by day. they have served us faithfully and it is time for them to move on. into retirement. and there wasn’t really enough room for us to all sit and watch tv together or have friends sit and chat with us...
but since we have NEVER bought any new furniture (except for some ikea bookshelves) we just couldn’t get over the sticker shock of new furniture that would be long enough and fit just right into our space... and we were appalled at the flimsyness of some of the cheaper ones that we tried out. we want sturdy furniture. with room enough for our friends and families to be comfortable in our family room.
we want to all be able to snuggle on the couches together to watch movies. without rosie having to sit on the floor. and we know that as our kids age and bring friends we want them to have room to sit with all of us too (and IF we allow them to date we want potential suitors to be able to sit... and not sit too close, if you understand me).
and this summer on our little jaunt to frank lloyd wright’s masterpiece, fallingwater, outside of pittsburgh we saw f.l.lw.’s homemade couches. large and built in (comfy? who knows, you aren’t allowed to sit on them) just like we wanted. and since f.l.l.w wasn’t available to come and build them (and beside i would be a tiny bit afraid of him, he was CRAZZZZZZY) we decided to do something crazzzzzy ourselves and build what we want.
we will keep you posted. and post photos. and perhaps take up donations to buy real couches in case this all goes really wrong... and it could.
because that is how we roll.
